I was saddened to hear about 1st Sgt. Cox's passing. I was one of his NJROTC students (class of 86) I'm hindsight I believe he was the most influential instructor I ever had, I had the upmost respect for him, even though I didn't join the corps, I did serve in the Army, and finishing up 30 years of public service. I still remember so many things he taight me, I will never forget the picture he shared with us he kept in his desk, he was in Vietnam, as I recall he resting on a bank, rifle and cigarette in hand with "my new home" on the back. Just one of many memories.

I had the pleasure of bumping into him a couple of times later in life but never got to tell him how much I appreciated everything he did for me, my school and our county. I am very sorry for the families loss and I pray for your comfort

Marine at the Gates.
It's with great sorrow that I learn of the passing of a mentor and friend. 1st Sgt. Cox was a mentor to me during high school where he was my instructor in JROTC and during my time in uniform, and later after my ETS. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My parents, Fred and Mary Smith, wanted to let the family know that they were saddened by the news of Carl's passing and the family is in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Fred worked with Carl at the Recruiting Office in Asheville in the early-mid 70's and was the ROTC instructor at Pisgah when Carl was at North Buncombe. They often held joint events for their students and both had a huge impact on their students and schools. Lots of great memories and a great man - Rest In Peace.

My thoughts and prayers for family and friends. Many years ago, I met Carl at the Recruiting Office in Asheville. My boyfriend had enlisted and was serving overseas. When our plans changed, I decided to enlist. Carl and Smitty were very helpful and supportive. There was another girl going to Raleigh so they arranged for us to go together. That was the beginning of a long friendship. Visited the office many times while home on leave even bringing a fellow WM from New Hampshire. Lost touch over the years but considered Carl a good friend. May he rest in peace...

1st Sgt was my instructor in NJROTC at North Buncombe High School for my four years there. He was an amazing instructor and even better person "off duty" and it was because of his leadership that sealed my journey to enlist in the Army. My prayers and thoughts go to his family.
