My childhood is filled with memories of so many Hiking trips, boat trips, ski trips and camping adventures with Howard, my Dad and Homer Morgan. Those three were quite the Gang! I am so grateful I got to visit with Howard at the Harrington memorial last year. I am so sorry for your loss but, Howard was larger than life and left one heck of a footprint. Best, Vicki Carnes

Dear Ursula, I am so surprised and saddened to hear that Howard is gone. He was a Best Friend to my Father, John Harrington. I think they met very early on in Las Vegas, I think through the Sierra club in the 1950s. I have Many memories of hikes and ski trips from my childhood that included Howard, my Dad and Homer Morgan. Those three men were quite the gang!. I am not going to be in Las Vegas in time to come to the memorial but I am grateful that I got to visit with Howard last year at the Harrington memorial. So sorry for your loss.
Best,
Vicki Carnes

Thanks, Howard, for finding that route out of Fool's Canyon. Otherwise we might still be at the bottom of Escalante.

Howard never seemed to tire of working for the environment. He was an inspiration to those of us who tired. He was a fountain of knowledge. Most of all he continued to enjoy the world that he worked for so tirelessly. It seemed that every time that I ran into him, he had either just returned from an adventure or was planning one. He is the best example of a life well lived that I have ever known.

Thank you for letting us know about Howard's death, Ursula . . . what a dear, purposeful, fun man our world has lost! We shared many memorable whitewater kayaking trips with Howard, back in the '80s. We got to talk with Howard after one of our Grand Canyon trips recently . . . and, after all the years since we had talked together, it was like we hadn't missed a day . . . the mark of a true friend. We already miss him, and appreciate all he taught us with his humor and humble example . . . and, of course, all he has done for our planet! We are honored to have known Howard!

Howard was a family friend since the early 60s, as he worked at the AEC with our late dad, Hal Mueller. What a terrific guy he was. He will be missed.

We feel fortunate to have known Howard through the Sierra Club. It was a pleasure and a great learning experience for us to work with him on a number of service trips to Death Valley, Glacier, Red Rock and Grand Canyon.. Also he was an inspiration for us on many environmental issues relating to Red Rock Canyon, our national parks, and our planet! The good memories of the projects, hikes, and camping with Howard will be with us always. Howard will be missed but has he has left his mark for a better world.

We were sad to hear of Howards death. He was a friend of my father, Robert. He was a great guy. My best memory will be decorating his Rabbit Volkswagon as a bunny and have the security guards at the AEC call him to tell him there was something wrong with his car. He was truly passionate about nature and preserving it for generations to come.

What a tremendous loss, Ursula, but to all desert lovers in Nevada who knew him and had contact with one of the most knowledgeable Meteorologists, or anything connected to our desert. Our prayers and thoughts are with you . Gail and Donna Andress

Thanks, Howard for all that you did in this life. I will always remember your overnight Sierra Club trip 'almost' through the Narrows in Zion-when it rained non-stop all night! We slogged back upstream the next morning where rangers were waiting with warnings of snow! It was a geat trip! So glad I had the opportunity to meet you. Happy Trails.
